Home9 The Breeding Farm 9 History

This Camargue horse breeding farm was created in 1985, followed by the creation of a riding school for children a few years later based on a western and playful riding style. 30 years later, at the Thoumas riding school, we still find the same qualities and characteristics on these horses.

Mobility. Intelligence. Endurance.

The Camargue horse is a beautiful sturdy horse and like the Lippizan, which it resembles like in many respects, it is also a white horse. Its beauty is however more primitive and more raw.

The Camargue has a proud and noble bearing.
His big eyes are vivid and intelligent.
It has an abundant mane and a very dense tail.
At birth the foals are black or brown. It is only over time that the Camargue horse becomes white.
We love this horse because for us it embodies something that has largely been lost through our civilization – freedom, adventure and intact nature.

The Camargue horse is living free in the south of France, in the desolate marshes and the saline steppes of the Rhone Delta. He’s a descendant of the wild horses who lived there long before our era. The constraints and stresses of everyday life make us seek compensation that makes sense. The Camargue provides an adequate response to this need.

It’s the companion of the good and bad days with whom you can, like the ‘guardians’ in France, play some playful Provencal games , or then leave the arena with a spanish step so adaptable and intelligent are these horses.

To the realization of our equestrian dream is linked the chance to be able to practice our favorite hobby with as little constraints as possible.

We know that originally the harnessing of the Camargue – Cavesson, branch jaw and martingale, was not intended for the leisure ride but is the fruit of the experience gained by herders during their daily work of sorting the Bulls for Enable them to control as extensively as possible on their horse. The hard and dangerous work of a bull keeper requires of his horse, among other things, maneuverability, intelligence and stamina.

To this is added a rapid reaction ability and a lot of courage. For this we need horses that go without hesitation from a firm ground to a moving ground, make a path of a safe foot in the swamps, and are able to swim through the lakes or deep ponds. Horses quite maneuverable and subdued to dodge the pointed horns of the bulls.

Here, disobedience could mean death for the rider and the horse.

Here we have no bulls and being a fan of Camargue does not make you immediately a gardian. What should be valid for any rider also applies to lovers of Camargue horses, whether in Germany or France:
A hard bridle must be entrusted only to the gentle hand of an experienced rider!
All the Camargue horses don’t need the traditional harnessing.

With the breaking-in of our young horses we have made the best experiences in net and have been enchanted for some time the qualities of the harness Merotisch that we hold for the ideal net. Our horses too…

We maintain the robustness of our 17 “Camargue” on 20 ha of meadow. Stallions, mares and foals live in the herd. The young stallions and the fillies in separate herds. All foals come to the world in the meadow, without our help. It is under the open sky that they feel the best. They hardly ever put themselves in the shelter of snow or rain. In winter they are fed only hay. They have no need for an enriched diet.

It is only in the summer that our horses seek their shelter on the meadow to protect themselves from the painful insect harassment. We don’t know eczema.
